Orientalists

Delacroix filled seven notebooks here in 1832 and drew on them for the rest of his life. Gérôme, Dinet, Fromentin and Lewis followed. These are beautiful paintings and they are also somebody's fantasy of a country that was being taken: made by Europeans, for Europeans, about a Morocco arranged for the viewer. We sell work in this manner because the light in it is real and the craft is real. The Morocco in it is not, and we would rather say that on the page than have you find it out later.

The painters this manner comes from died more than seventy years ago, so their work belongs to everybody now. This is our painting, made in their manner, not a copy of any canvas of theirs.
