About this piece

Almohad, around 1188, and the only decorated gate in nineteen kilometres of wall. Blue-grey cut stone that goes almost pink at the end of the day, concentric carved arches, a band of Kufic. It was the ceremonial way into the royal quarter, which is why it is carved and the other gates are not. There is no tilework on it, whatever the paintings say.

Cut stone, evening pink, deep shadow

Public domain

The painters this manner comes from died more than seventy years ago, so their work belongs to everybody now. This is our painting, made in their manner, not a copy of any canvas of theirs.
