About this piece
Delacroix crossed into Morocco in 1832 with a diplomatic mission and came back with seven notebooks he mined for the next thirty years. He wrote that he had found Rome living in Africa, which tells you more about what he expected than about what he saw. The square at dusk became the subject every painter after him took: smoke off the food stalls, lamps coming on, a crowd going to silhouette. The light in it is real. The crowd in those pictures was arranged for a viewer in Paris.
