Jemaa el-Fnaa
Jemaa el-Fnaa has been the open heart of Marrakech since the Almoravids laid the city out in the eleventh century. By day it is orange-juice carts and water-sellers; as the light goes, the storytellers, musicians and food stalls arrive and the food stalls make the square a busy open-air dining place. UNESCO recognised it in 2001 not for any building but for the performance itself, the crowd itself is the monument.
The Koutoubia minaret stands at the square’s south-west corner, so almost any view across the flagstones has it in the background. That is the view we paint.

We paint the square at dusk, just after rain, when the flagstones hold the sky and every lantern doubles itself in the wet ground. The lamps are lit, the crowd is a warm blur of ochre buildings and cart-light behind, and the minaret is a small gold tower in the violet distance. Your pet sits front and centre on a red Berber rug, closer to the viewer than anything else in the picture.
The contrast is the point. The loudest place in the country goes on behind an animal that is not moving at all.
Composition suggestions
Tan, red and white coats glow against the blue-violet sky; a black coat holds its shape well against the wet, reflective ground. It suits a dog that sits squarely and looks straight at the camera, and a cat that will hold a pose on a cushion. Larger breeds fill the rug; small animals read as a single bright point in a big city, which is its own kind of charm.
