Souk Semmarine
Souk Semmarine is the spine of the market north of Jemaa el-Fnaa. The name comes from the farriers and blacksmiths who once worked here; today it is textiles, leather, brass and lanterns, and the alley is roofed with slatted reed and timber built to keep the sun off the goods. It has been striping the ground in bars of light for as long as anyone has records.
Everything that hangs here hangs to be seen: rugs from the Atlas folded over rails, lanterns clustered overhead, copper stacked at knee height. The colour comes from the merchandise and the light comes from above.
Those bars of light fall across a coat like brushwork. Nothing we paint is more textural.

We paint the lane at midday, when the sun is high enough to come straight down through the slats. The light lands in bars across the dust, the rugs and your pet’s back, and the shadow between the bars is warm rather than black. Hanging brass catches it; a dark cedar door closes the view behind.
It is the most textural scene in the collection. Fur and wool and worn wood in the same striped light, and a bright, open expression at the centre of it.
Composition suggestions
Golden and red coats are extraordinary here, the stripes of light turn a retriever into something brushed. Long, dense fur takes the light best. A dog that smiles for the camera belongs in this alley; a nervous animal may prefer the stillness of a courtyard.
