About this piece

Nineteen kilometres of rammed earth, raised in the 1120s and repaired every generation since with the same red mud. At noon there is no modelling at all: one flat plane of ochre, a hard black line of shadow at its foot, a bleached sky. It is a harder subject than it looks, because there is nothing to hide behind.

Rammed earth, hard shadow, white sky

The painters this manner comes from died more than seventy years ago, so their work belongs to everybody now. This is our painting, made in their manner, not a copy of any canvas of theirs.
