The Ramparts
The walls of Marrakech were begun in 1126 under the Almoravid ruler Ali ibn Yusuf and raised, by most accounts, in about a year. They run some nineteen kilometres around the medina and were built in pisé, the local red earth rammed between boards with lime and straw, which is why the city is called red: the colour of the wall is the colour of the ground it stands on.
The wall is pierced by a score of gates and has been patched in the same earth for nine centuries. In the last hour of daylight the west-facing stretches turn the colour of a clay oven.

We paint a stretch of the wall at sunset, from the sandy path that runs along its foot. A bicycle leans against the pisé, a line of low hedges and a single date palm stand on the other side, and the wall recedes in bays toward a sky going gold and rose. Composition suggestions
Sighthounds and any long-legged, upright dog: the standing pose and the receding wall give them room. Fawn, cream and red coats melt into the light; black coats become a silhouette with a lit edge, which is dramatic. It suits a walking-companion kind of dog, the one who knows this path.
