Bab Agnaou
Bab Agnaou is the ceremonial gate of the Kasbah, built by the Almohads around 1188 under Yaqub al-Mansur. In a city walled in red earth it is the one gate carved in stone, grey-blue sandstone from the Guéliz hills, and the arch is cut in bands: a horseshoe, then a ring of interlacing, then a wide frieze of Kufic script, the whole thing framed in a rectangle of carved shells and scallops. Its name is explained several ways; one telling makes it the gate of the hornless ram.
It was the sultan’s own entrance to the palace quarter. Today it is the way into the Saadian Tombs, and the finest gate in Marrakech.

We paint the gate in raking late-afternoon sun, when the carving throws deep shadow and the stone goes from grey to warm ochre where the light hits it. The arch fills the upper two-thirds of the picture. Your pet sits on the worn paving directly beneath it, centred, so that the rings of carving close around them like the setting of a medal.
The composition does the work. There is nowhere for the eye to go but through the arch to the animal.

Big, dignified dogs, mastiffs, shepherds, mountain breeds, look as if they were posted there. Tan and fawn coats match the warmed stone; a dark coat stands out against it. A serious face suits the gate; a goofy one is a lovely joke against it.
