A living tradition

The Carpets

Amazigh weaving, almost all of it by women, almost none of it signed. A Beni Ourain is a winter blanket from the Middle Atlas before it is a design object; a Boucherouite is made of rags because there was no wool. The vocabulary of diamonds, combs and lines is a written language that outsiders read as decoration.

This comes from a craft people still practise. It is nobody's private property and it is not nobody's work either: it was made, over centuries, mostly by women whose names were never written down. We say so rather than call it anonymous.
