About this piece
Undyed wool, a charcoal diamond lattice, and a pile deep enough to sleep under — because that is what it was for. Beni Ourain rugs were winter bedding long before a Paris dealer put one under an Eames chair. The lattice is not decoration: the diamond is a protective sign, and the irregularities are where a weaver corrected herself and carried on.
A living tradition
This comes from a craft people still practise. It is nobody's private property and it is not nobody's work either: it was made, over centuries, mostly by women whose names were never written down. We say so rather than call it anonymous.
