About this piece
Seen from the terrace above, the dye pits at Fez are a grid of round stone vats full of saffron, madder and indigo, and the men move between them on the walls. Seen from slightly further away they are a rosette. The tannery has been working since the eleventh century in a city whose other great craft is cutting that same geometry out of tile, and this piece is the argument that those two facts are related.

Composed here, from a brief we wrote, in the manner of mid-century photomontage. Nothing in it is taken from anybody else’s collage — which is why we can sell it to you, and why it can be recoloured to your room without asking anyone’s permission.
