About this piece
A maâlem cuts zellij with a sharpened hammer, one tessera at a time, from a pattern he holds in his head. The chips come off fast and hard. Follow them up the frame and they stop being ceramic somewhere around the middle: by the top they are storks, which nest on every minaret and ruin in the country and are the one bird nobody in Morocco will touch.
Made in our atelier
Composed here, from a brief we wrote, in the manner of mid-century photomontage. Nothing in it is taken from anybody else’s collage — which is why we can sell it to you, and why it can be recoloured to your room without asking anyone’s permission.
