Menara Olive Grove
The Menara is an Almohad water garden laid out around 1157: a great rectangular basin, fed by khettara channels that bring snowmelt underground from the Atlas thirty kilometres away, watering olive groves on every side. The engineering still works. The pavilion on the basin’s edge, with its green pyramidal roof, took its present form in the nineteenth century as a sultan’s summer retreat.
On a clear winter morning the Atlas stands white above the olives and the whole range is doubled in the water. It is the picture on half the postcards in the city, and it is real.

We paint a cold, clear morning. The basin fills the middle distance, the pavilion sits at the far corner with palms beside it, and the mountains, snow on the peaks, close the horizon. Your pet stands on the stone edge of the basin in the foreground, with the water and the reflection behind.
It is our most open scene, and the one with the most sky.
Composition suggestions
Large, standing dogs, sighthounds, pointers, anything that carries itself, because the scene gives them a horizon to stand against. Fawn and gold coats sit well with the olives and stone; a white dog echoes the snow. Cats can be painted here but the scale favours a dog.
