About this piece
The pavilion is the photograph everybody takes and the basin is the reason it is there. Almohad engineers cut a reservoir to irrigate an olive grove and fed it from the Atlas through a khettara, an underground channel, so the water arrives without evaporating on the way. What reads as a beauty spot is twelfth-century hydraulics that still works.
