Jardin Majorelle
Jacques Majorelle, a painter from Nancy, bought land on the edge of Guéliz in 1923 and spent the next forty years making a garden around his studio. His studio and the garden’s blue architecture became defining features; he opened the garden to visitors in 1947. After his death it declined until Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé bought it in 1980 and restored it. Saint Laurent’s ashes were scattered here after his death in 2008.
The garden is cactus, bamboo and bougainvillea around water, and everywhere the blue: on walls, pots, pergolas, doors. The blue is a colour reference for this composition; we do not claim a patent or a unique digital colour formula.

We paint the wall in late morning, when the sun is high enough to light the cobalt without bleaching it. A door of studded teal-green planks, a bright yellow pot with a fern, the blue running from the ground up. Your pet sits on the blue ledge at the foot of the wall, small against the colour, often with the burnt-orange silk foulard that the blue makes sing.
There is no landscape here, no distance. The colour is the setting.
Composition suggestions
Silver tabbies, grey and blue cats, and any coat with cool tones, the blue makes them glow. Warm coats get the opposite effect: an orange cat or a red dog against Majorelle blue is the most saturated picture we make. A bright-eyed, alert expression suits it; the scene is playful.
