An Adobe Wall
No monument at all. Pisé, earth rammed between boards, dried by the sun, is what most of Marrakech was built from for nine hundred years, and a plain stretch of it, cracked by heat and patched every generation with the same mud and the same hands, is as true a picture of the city as any gate. The colour is the ground’s own.

We paint the wall in hard afternoon light, straight on. The earth is warm ochre, the surface is rough and hand-finished, a palm frond throws a sharp shadow across the top corner, and the ground is packed earth. Your pet sits against the wall, filling the frame, with nothing else in the picture.
