The Palm Grove
The Palmeraie is the oasis north of the city: by tradition a hundred thousand date palms over some thirteen thousand hectares, watered by khettaras, underground channels dug in the Almoravid period to bring water from the Atlas without losing it to the sun. Legend says the grove grew from the date stones the Almoravid soldiers spat out while they camped here to found the city.
It is thinner than it was, and villas have crept in, but between the trees it is still ochre earth, long shadows and the Atlas on the horizon.

We paint the grove at the end of the day. The sun is on the ground between the trunks, throwing long palm shadows across the track; the far palms are backlit; the mountains are a violet line behind. Composition suggestions
Desert dogs and sighthounds above all, sloughis, salukis, greyhounds, whose shape the low light draws. Fawn and gold coats belong to the ground; white and cream glow against the dusk. Any calm, upright dog that stands well. It is spacious, so a small animal becomes a small figure.
