About this piece
A seqqaya is a public fountain built into a wall, endowed by somebody as a charitable act and faced in the best tile the endowment would buy. They are the most decorated things in the medina and the most ordinary — the whole point was that anybody could drink.
Glaze, carved plaster, wet stone
A living tradition
This comes from a craft people still practise. It is nobody's private property and it is not nobody's work either: it was made, over centuries, mostly by women whose names were never written down. We say so rather than call it anonymous.
