About this piece
Seen from directly above, a zellij field radiates outward from one eight-pointed star through ring after ring of cut tile. Nothing repeats on a square grid; it grows. This is the shape the whole visual language of the country is built from, and it is the shape on the front of this site.

A living tradition
This comes from a craft people still practise. It is nobody's private property and it is not nobody's work either: it was made, over centuries, mostly by women whose names were never written down. We say so rather than call it anonymous.
