About this piece
Maghrebi script rounds where the eastern hands angle: the descenders sweep into deep bowls, the fa and qaf are dotted the other way round, and the line sits lower than a Cairo scribe would set it. It is written with a pointed nib rather than a chisel-cut one, which is why it looks drawn rather than built.

A living tradition
This comes from a craft people still practise. It is nobody's private property and it is not nobody's work either: it was made, over centuries, mostly by women whose names were never written down. We say so rather than call it anonymous.
