About this piece
The hanging mosque lamp at the centre of a frontispiece is why these pages are warm rather than cool: everything around it is built to make gold look lit. The motif comes from the lamps themselves, pierced brass hung on chains, which throw exactly this kind of light.
Gold, lamp amber, deep ground
A living tradition
This comes from a craft people still practise. It is nobody's private property and it is not nobody's work either: it was made, over centuries, mostly by women whose names were never written down. We say so rather than call it anonymous.
