Boulevard Mohammed V
Guéliz is the town the French built outside the walls from 1913, to a plan by Henri Prost, so that the medina could be left as it was. Its spine is the avenue now named after Mohammed V, lined with the low, rounded, cream-coloured buildings of the day, art deco balconies, ironwork, café awnings, and planted with jacarandas that turn the whole avenue purple for a few weeks each spring.
It is where Marrakech drinks its coffee, buys its books and sits on rattan chairs watching the avenue go by. A lighter, brighter city than the one inside the walls.
