The Palm Avenue
Hivernage is the quarter between the old walls and Guéliz that was laid out in the 1920s and 30s as the district for wintering, hotels, villas and gardens set back from wide avenues. The avenues were planted with date palms, and a century on the trunks have grown into colonnades that run for hundreds of metres, with the Koutoubia’s tip showing between them at the far end.
It is the quarter for arriving slowly, and the avenue is the picture of that.

We paint the avenue with the sun low at its far end, so the light comes straight down the tunnel of trunks and the dust in the air turns gold. Clipped hedges and terracotta walls line the path; the minaret stands small in the haze at the vanishing point. Your pet walks toward the viewer down the centre of the avenue, mid-stride, lit from behind and in front by the same warm light.
It is the one scene in the collection built for movement.

Any dog that walks well on a lead and will be photographed walking toward the camera, retrievers, shepherds, spaniels with their ears up. Gold and red coats are lit like a halo; white coats glow. It is less suited to cats, who rarely walk toward a camera on purpose.
